A Conversation with the History -- Painting Mr. Zhu Qiqian's former Dwelling - [article]

In Summer 1996, I visited Mr. Zhu Qiqian's home again with the students from University of Florida's Architecture Department.
One day in October 2005, my friend and I carried our art supplies and came to Dong Si Ba Tiao Hutong. Our location scouting brought us a surprise when we found an intriguing hutong scene: women sitting by the road washing clothes, old ladies chatting with each other; blooming jasmine, violet, islets, and zygocactus. We set up the easels immediately and started to capture this hutong on our canvases. The neighbors noticed us and gathered around. A warmhearted woman pointed out to us that Zhu Qiqian used to live there.
I was indulging myself in painting, so I was not quite into the cultural geography, but Mr. Zhu Qiqian's name struck me. He was a winner of a national scholarship during the reign of Emperor Guang Xu. He served three governments as a high official. He also achieved excellence in entrepreneurship, scholarship, architecture, and art.
However, this common hutong scene could barely remind me of any of Mr. Zhu's prestige. The woman then explained to us that Mr. Zhu's dwelling was hidden around the corner. I realized that this is an "L" shape hutong. After I made a right turn, a magnificent and well preserved Ruyi Gate was revealed! My heart skipped a beat when I saw this miracle. How could this exquisite gate survive the prevailing demolition? Former Prime Minister Zhou Enlai visited this house twice. Mr. Zhu Qiqian donated his other dwelling to the city, which is located at No. 3 Zhao Tang Zi hutong. He spent most of his time in Beijing at this Dong Si Ba Tiao home until his passing in 1964.
Although spending so much time cruising in the vanishing hutongs, I never expected this encounter with a giant's house. Is it fate? No one knows, but I know it is beyond my imagination. When I was painting this magnificent Ruyi gate, a gentleman came up and brought us some water. He invited us into the courtyard, which was totally an unexpected warm welcome for me who is often questioned and rejected by onlookers. Through the conversation with this gentleman, I learned that he is Mr. Zhu Qiqian's great grandson Mr. Zhu Yanqi. Mr. Zhu led us to the main lobby of the house, where I saw Mr. Zhu Qiqian's awe-inspiring large portrait. The photographs on the wall captured the un-altered decoration of the house and documented the family's history, and Prime Minister Zhou Enlai's visit.
What I usually see at other historical houses and museums are rigid and standard displays. I felt a little bit of rejection by those bland displays. However at that moment when I was sitting with Mr. Zhu in his house, where historical events happened, I was deeply touched by the live atmosphere, Mr. Zhu's hospitality, and anecdotes.
Imagine the concerns, enthusiasm and beliefs of our nation, our ancestors, and our brothers. We, the new generation, besides satisfying ourselves, pursuing novelties, and exhausting natural resources, do we still have any conscience left for a rightful living? At the moment, the once best achievement of urban planning, Beijing, is being brutally destructed and eliminated from our nation's heart, culture, and history. The concerned people, both national and international, are looking at this tragedy shocked, angrily, and hopelessly.
